A Building with Aviation Heritage
Aviator House occupies the former headquarters of the Air Line Pilots Association at 1625 Massachusetts Avenue NW. Reimagined as 157 residences, the building retains its modernist character while introducing interiors inspired by the golden age of aviation.
This history gives the split flap display a clear connection to its surroundings. The airport-inspired lettering, physical flipping action and airplane symbol carry the building’s aviation identity into the welcome experience.
From 45 to 72 Modules
The project originally called for 45 modules in a 5-row × 9-column layout. After production was completed and the display had been dispatched to the shipping depot, the customer decided to expand the installation.
TS Display coordinated the return of the shipment, produced 27 additional modules and adapted the system to a 6-row × 12-column configuration.
Using 20 × 15 cm modules, the expanded layout increased the active display area from 100 × 135 cm to 120 × 180 cm. The additional row and three extra columns provided more room for welcome messages, property names and custom symbols.
The completed 72-module system was then delivered for installation at Aviator House.

A Mechanical Welcome, Built into the Interior
Positioned directly behind the concierge desk, the finished display forms a focal point within the reception area.
Messages such as “WELCOME TO AVIATOR HOUSE” and “BOZZUTO” appear in white characters against a black background. The custom airplane symbol adds a visual reference to the property’s identity, while each change of message brings movement and sound to the lobby.
The installation shows how a split flap display can become part of an interior’s design language, combining practical messaging with a physical connection to the story of a place.
