Split Flap Display for NØN by KKDC in Jakarta

A 4.8-meter-wide, 128-module mechanical split flap display integrated into KKDC’s new experience center in Jakarta

TS Display produced a 4 × 32 split flap display for NØN by KKDC, a new experience center created by architectural lighting company KKDC in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Using 128 of TS Display’s 20 × 15 cm modules, the completed display measures approximately 80 cm high × 480 cm wide. Installed prominently above the main interior space, it combines mechanical movement, information and visual identity as part of the architecture itse

Split Flap Specs

Module Size: 20 cm (H) × 15 cm (W)
Layout: 4 Rows × 32 Columns
Overall Display Area: 80 cm (H) × 480 cm (W)
Finish: Black Flap Surface with White Characters and Custom Graphics
Display Content: English & Indonesian Messages / Opening Hours / Brand Graphics

Designed for English and Indonesian Content

One of the important considerations in this project was the required display content.

The split flap display needed to present messages in both English and Indonesian. Because some of the English and Indonesian messages required relatively long character sequences, the display was designed with 32 modules across each row.

The 4 × 32 configuration provides enough horizontal space for longer messages while maintaining the strong proportions required for such a large architectural installation.

Beyond standard letters and numbers, customized flap graphics and symbols were incorporated into the display, allowing NØN to create more distinctive visual sequences alongside functional information.

A Mechanical Display Within a “Gallery of Light”

NØN by KKDC is more than a conventional café. Created by KKDC as an experience center in Jakarta, the space combines architectural lighting, immersive environments, food and beverage, and areas for interaction and collaboration.

Against this carefully designed interior, a conventional digital screen would create a very different visual effect.

The split flap display introduces physical movement instead.

Each message is formed through the mechanical rotation of individual flaps. When 128 modules begin changing simultaneously, the movement and characteristic mechanical sound turn a simple information change into a visual moment within the space.

The finished installation can display opening information, coffee-related messages, brand graphics, symbols and other changing content while remaining integrated with the architectural character of NØN.

128 Modules, One Integrated Display

At 4.8 meters wide, this project demonstrates how a modular split flap system can become a substantial architectural feature without relying on LED or LCD technology.

All 128 modules operate together as one display while each character position remains individually controlled.

The modular structure also allowed the dimensions to be developed specifically around the available installation area:

4 rows × 32 columns × 20 × 15 cm modules

= 80 cm high × 480 cm wide

This long horizontal format is particularly suitable for cafés, restaurants, hospitality spaces, brand experience centers and other commercial interiors where messages need to remain visible across a wide space.

Pre-Shipment Visit and Project Review

Before shipment to Indonesia, the owner of KKDC personally visited TS Display to inspect the completed 128-module split flap display and review its operation and overall build quality.

During the visit, we tested the complete 4 × 32 display together and discussed the project in detail before final delivery.

The visit also provided an opportunity to exchange ideas about potential future cooperation between KKDC and TS Display, including how mechanical display technology could be applied in different architectural and commercial environments.

Following the final inspection and testing, the display was prepared for shipment to Jakarta and subsequently installed at NØN by KKDC.

From Our Workshop to Jakarta

The completed installation shows the entire process coming together—from module production and customized flap content to testing, international delivery and final integration into the interior.

Today, the 4.8-meter split flap display sits prominently inside NØN by KKDC, bringing physical movement and changing information into a space already centered around lighting, architecture and experience.

For TS Display, the project is another example of how split flap technology can move beyond traditional departure-board applications and become part of contemporary retail, hospitality and architectural design.
